Shops will remain shut on New Year's Day as negotiations continue between the state government and opposition over Perth's extended shopping hours. Armadale and Midland will be designated as special trading precincts after legislation was passed this week that will allow both areas to remain open until 9pm on weeknights and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

Premier Colin Barnett said those changes would be in place before Christmas, while an extension of trading hours across metropolitan Perth was set to be tabled in Parliament next week. Mr Barnett said the government had planned on changing laws to allow trade on New Year's Day as well as Boxing Day. But negotiations between the two parties ended in the decision to keep shops closed on New Year's Day.
