Rugby Farmers Mart has been in operation at Stoneleigh Park since , and throughputs are continually increasing. From this a farmer-owned market emerged, funded by shareholders and governed by a board of directors made up of six farmers and two co-opted members — an accountant and a surveyor. Rugby Farmers Mart now operates from the NSA sheep sheds at Stoneleigh Park, the site of the old Royal Show.

As a market with one regular sale day a week and special seasonal sales on Fridays, Mr Wrench says they have had to add five extra events for the forthcoming year to accommodate increased throughput.

Stoneleigh Park is about hectares acres and owned by Mars Pension Fund, with the Rugby Farmers Mart offices in the Charolais Pavilion. Any building erected at the site must be semi-permanent and cannot be concreted into the ground, causing some limitations.

Stock numbers are up, but we are really trying to increase our volumes in all areas and propagate our business in the fat cattle ring.

A grant application is underway for an extension of the sheep pens and Mr Wrench hopes numbers will continue to increase. With Birmingham and its ethnic market on their doorstep, sheep numbers are robust.

Throughput of store lambs in the last six months is up per cent on the same trading period last year. Store lamb sales see the lambs going through the ring, which Mr Wrench believes creates more of a spectacle. Mr Wrench believes in cataloguing every sale to ensure the proper marketing of available stock, allowing buyers to know what to expect. We hope expanding capacity through the sheep pens and then cattle lairage will achieve this.

Just two miles from the M6 and M40, the market has good road links. Although its core business comes from within a miles radius, stock is drawn from as far as Essex and the East, down to Dover and Brighton.

Similarly, all store cattle sales are streamed online. As abattoir grades and specifications become increasingly stringent, I am confident more sales will return to the markets. The recent rapid growth in numbers shows the level of demand for this format.
